Traditional katana mounts (koshirae) are built for wear and display — lacquered scabbards, wrapped handles, and metal fittings that can trap moisture against a katana sword over time. A shirasaya solves that problem by stripping everything back to plain, unfinished wood, usually Japanese magnolia, that breathes and lets any residual oil or moisture evaporate rather than sit against the steel.
